Seiko 6139 “Bruce Lee”: the 1969 automatic chronograph

One of the world’s first automatic chronographs, and a collector favourite with a famous nickname. Here is the short history and what to check before you buy.

Vintage Seiko 6139-6013 automatic chronograph with a yellow dial, black tachymeter ring and day-date window on a steel bracelet

Few vintage chronographs are as easy to recognise as the Seiko 6139. The bold tachymeter ring, the single small counter and the day-date window at 3 o’clock make it a favourite with collectors, and its story starts in 1969.

A 1969 landmark

Seiko launched Caliber 6139 in 1969. Seiko itself calls it one of the world’s first automatic chronographs and says its column wheel and vertical clutch improved the precision of timing. Several makers brought out an automatic chronograph that year, and who was first is still debated, so “one of the first” is the honest way to put it.

The movement has a single 30-minute counter, shows the day and date, and beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour. It winds from the motion of your wrist and cannot be wound by hand.

Where does the “Bruce Lee” name come from?

Collectors use the nickname for the black-dial watches in the 6139-601X family. It comes from photos of Bruce Lee wearing a 6139. Dealer research points to a 1969 6139-6010, but which exact reference he wore has not been confirmed, and the name is used loosely across the family. Treat it as a nickname, not as proof that a particular watch was his.

The 6139 has a place in spaceflight too. Colonel William Pogue took his own 6139 on the Skylab 4 mission in 1973, and yellow-dial versions are now often called “Pogues”.

What to check before you buy

  • The chronograph. Start, stop and reset should all work, and the seconds hand should return exactly to 12.
  • Day and date. Both should change cleanly.
  • Dial and hands. Look for original luminous plots and hands that match the tachymeter ring.
  • Parts that have been swapped. Case backs and bracelets are sometimes mixed between models. A good seller tells you.

The Seiko 6139-6013 we have in stock

This is a Seiko “Bruce Lee” Chronograph, reference 6139-6013, with a yellow dial and a fixed tachymeter bezel. The case is 39 mm wide, 43 mm lug to lug, with a 19 mm lug width.

The movement is automatic Caliber 6139. The chronograph starts, stops and resets, and the day shows in Arabic and English. We timed it before listing. The cosmetic condition is very nice with some signs of use. To be open about it, the case back comes from another Seiko chronograph, the 6139-6040, and it fits perfectly.

Price: $697. One piece, and when it’s gone it’s gone. See the full listing, photos and video.
